Prepare a Letter sheet
Place a short edge at the top. This end will become the pointed nose.
Layers: One whole portrait Letter sheet.
Check: The rectangle is 8½ inches wide and 11 inches tall.
Explore this step ↑STEP 1 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Crease the lengthwise center
Bring the left long edge onto the right long edge and press the fold.
Layers: The entire left half moves.
Check: Both long edges match.
Explore this step ↑STEP 2 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Open the center crease
Unfold completely and lay the sheet flat.
Layers: Return the same half to the table.
Check: The center guide runs from top to bottom.
Explore this step ↑STEP 3 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Crease across the middle
Bring the top short edge onto the bottom short edge.
Layers: Move the whole upper half.
Check: The short edges match.
Explore this step ↑STEP 4 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Open the transverse guide
Unfold fully again. Keep the original top edge at the top.
Layers: Return the upper half.
Check: Two perpendicular guides cross at the sheet center.
Explore this step ↑STEP 5 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Bring in the left corner
Fold the upper-left corner inward so its top edge lies along the vertical center guide.
Layers: Move the single upper-left triangular corner.
Check: The corner lands 4¼ inches below the original top midpoint.
Explore this step ↑STEP 6 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Bring in the right corner
Repeat on the upper-right corner, leaving the left triangle closed.
Layers: Move only the right corner.
Check: The two top edges meet at the center.
Explore this step ↑STEP 7 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Narrow the left side
Bring the left sloping edge onto the centerline, keeping the top point fixed.
Layers: Carry both layers of the left edge packet.
Check: A longer, narrower left triangle lies against the center.
Explore this step ↑STEP 8 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Narrow the right side
Bring the right sloping edge onto the centerline to match.
Layers: Carry the complete right edge packet.
Check: The two long flaps meet below a sharp top point.
Explore this step ↑STEP 9 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Turn to the plain face
Turn the whole sheet over without changing which end is the nose.
Layers: All layers turn together.
Check: The long flaps are underneath.
Explore this step ↑STEP 10 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Bring the point to the bottom
Fold the entire upper packet down along the transverse center guide. Land the top point at the bottom-edge midpoint.
Layers: Carry every layer above the horizontal guide.
Check: The point reaches the bottom edge; the top becomes a short horizontal fold.
Explore this step ↑STEP 11 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Turn back to the flaps
Turn the entire packet over again, keeping the short folded edge at the top.
Layers: Keep the downward nose folded.
Check: The long folded edges face you again.
Explore this step ↑STEP 12 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Fold the left shoulder in
Bring the left end of the short top edge down onto the centerline. The crease runs diagonally from the top midpoint.
Layers: Move the complete shoulder packet, including its hidden nose layers.
Check: The left half of the short top edge lies on the centerline.
Explore this step ↑STEP 13 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Fold the right shoulder in
Match the other shoulder, bringing the right half of the short top edge onto the centerline.
Layers: Move all layers of this shoulder, keeping the first closed.
Check: Two shoulder packets meet along the center.
Explore this step ↑STEP 14 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Expose the downward point
Turn the whole packet over so the downward-pointing triangle faces you.
Layers: Move the entire sheet without unfolding.
Check: The narrow point is on top of the broad backing.
Explore this step ↑STEP 15 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Return the nose upward
Find the two places where the sides of the narrow triangle meet the diagonal shoulder edges. Join them with a horizontal crease and raise the free point. This hinge is about 1.61 inches below the transverse guide.
Layers: Move only the free nose packet below these intersections; keep the broad backing and shoulders still.
Check: The point projects beyond the shoulders, forming a long nose.
Explore this step ↑STEP 16 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Turn to the cockpit flaps
Turn the packet over once more, keeping the nose pointed upward.
Layers: All layers turn together.
Check: Two small inner flap edges meet below the nose.
Explore this step ↑STEP 17 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Open the left cockpit flap
Fold the left inner flap outward. Bring its vertical inner edge onto the diagonal shoulder edge on the left; start the new crease at their common upper point.
Layers: Move the inner portion of the left shoulder packet, including its folded layers. Leave the backing and returned nose still.
Check: The inner edge now follows the diagonal and a small triangular flap points left.
Explore this step ↑STEP 18 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Open the right cockpit flap
Repeat the same edge-to-edge fold on the right.
Layers: Move only the corresponding right shoulder packet.
Check: The two outward flaps match beside the centerline.
Explore this step ↑STEP 19 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Close the center body
Fold the original left half toward you over the right half along the lengthwise center crease.
Layers: Carry the whole half, including its nose and cockpit layers.
Check: Both outlines match, with the cockpit flaps inside the closed halves.
Explore this step ↑STEP 20 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Fold the first wing
At the tail, mark 1 inch from the centerfold. Join this mark to the nose with a crease and fold the outside wing away from the other half.
Layers: Move every layer outboard of the root, leaving a narrow wedge of body.
Check: The root starts at the nose and leaves a 1-inch body depth at the tail.
Explore this step ↑STEP 21 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Turn for the second wing
Turn the whole folded plane over to expose the second wing.
Layers: Keep the first wing folded.
Check: The second side faces you.
Explore this step ↑STEP 22 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Match the second wing
Use the same nose-to-tail line on this side. Fold the second wing away from the first.
Layers: Move the second complete wing packet only.
Check: Both wing roots and tail marks match.
Explore this step ↑STEP 23 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Return to the first side
Turn the whole folded airplane back before opening its wings.
Layers: Keep both root folds closed.
Check: The first folded wing faces you again.
Explore this step ↑STEP 24 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Open the first wing
Hold the body closed and lift the first wing 90° away from its flat folded position.
Layers: Open the same complete wing packet along its root.
Check: The first wing stands at a right angle to the body.
Explore this step ↑STEP 25 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Open the second wing
Lift the other wing by the same amount to the opposite side.
Layers: Keep the center body closed.
Check: Both wings extend away from the body.
Explore this step ↑STEP 26 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Hold the body underneath
Rotate the entire airplane to put its narrow body below the wings. This is handling, not a new fold.
Layers: Move the whole connected sheet.
Check: The pointed nose leads the two swept wings and small cockpit flaps.
Explore this step ↑STEP 27 · Sonic Jet · Letter version
Check the Sonic Jet
Compare the wing roots and cockpit flaps on both sides. Keep the trailing edges straight for this untaped version.
Layers: One sheet forms the nose, cockpit flaps, wings and body.
Check: The construction is complete; flight performance has not been tested.

Adaptation: The reference accepts Letter and A4; these diagrams use Letter only. Paired folds, reopening and whole-packet turns are separated into teaching stages. The returned nose hinge joins the two shoulder intersections, about 1.61 inches below the transverse center guide. The cockpit folds bisect the angle between each inner vertical flap edge and its diagonal shoulder edge. These geometric landmarks make the photographed alignments explicit. The source gives no wing-root measurement: we use an authored line from the nose to a mark 1 inch from the centerfold at the tail, then open each wing 90° from its flat folded position. Optional source tape, drawn pilot and trailing-edge curl are omitted from this untaped, undecorated version. The name does not imply a speed or flight-performance claim.
